Linda's Message for October

Hope you have gotten out to snap some shots of autumn beauty. The trees are turning gorgeous shades of yellow and red but it appears the wind wants to take the beauty away from us too soon. I just returned from Texas where everything is still beautiful and green and flowers are blooming everywhere. In fact, the temperatures kept flirting with

90 degrees while I was there. What a shock to come home to cooler weather with wind and a few raindrops.
While I was in Texas I got to attend the Metroplex Camera Show in Grapevine, TX. It was like a huge swap meet. I got to see many older cameras that I hadn’t seen in years, including a Hasselblad (I had never seen one of these). They also had backdrops, tripods, lenses, and more. I was glad I didn’t have much cash with me or I would have come home with tons of goodies. The person I talked with the most turned out to be from Lincoln, something I did not expect. I guess they were members of the camera club years ago; yes, I did invite them to come and check us out now but it sounded like they are very busy people.

I haven’t heard anything about the Wildlife Safari outing but I hope all went well. I know it was a gorgeous day. If you have a chance, please thank Clark Springman for setting up the safari trip for everyone. I was taking pictures of the Memphis, NE History Day which enabled me to take pictures of such things as an old school that is no longer used and learn the history of the town that at one time was predicted to be better than Omaha.

Apparently the sailboat regatta at Branched Oak Lake went well. I heard from Kelly Clark who said he took many, many pictures. Hopefully we will get to see some of them soon. Did others of you get great pictures also?

It sounds like the October meeting will be very informative. Ken Plank will share some of his photos with us. He is also going to give us some tips on wildlife and nature photography in the areas around here. This is a meeting all of us who love to do nature shooting should attend.

Thanks to all of you who heard my pleadings for help with “Boo at the Zoo”. We have a very good relationship with the zoo and this should strengthen it even more. They wanted us to do the event and I was ecstatic when I could call them back and tell them we had enough volunteers to do it. If you haven’t volunteered yet and would like to be involved please just contact me. With all the cute kids in costume we should be well entertained for the 5 evenings we are there. Hey, I may even wear a costume myself.

I received information from the 2009 Ocean State International Exhibition of Photography. It is recognized by PSA. Over 18 medals and awards will be given. They will accept both slides and digital, but not both from an individual. The deadline for entries is October 31st, 2009. Have you taken your images of “heads” for the October 4 X 6 showing? I haven’t done mine yet but hope to have something ready by the meeting date. I have lots of ideas but have had little time to implement them since I am working on the almost 400 shots I took in Texas, mostly of my only granddaughter.

Another reminder – get your CDs to me of the last Nebraska State Fair in Lincoln at this next meeting. I would like to get them down to the State Historical Society as soon as possible. I bet you have great shots that will be worthy of comment 100 years from now.

Upcoming events:

We need to get orchid pictures together for Yvonne Nelson to place on exhibition at the Lincoln Orchid Society Show. If you wish they also have a competition. The dates are November 14-15, 2009 at Westfield, Gateway, #5 Gateway with Saturday from 7-8 PM left open for photographers only.

The National Parks photo contest is still running through December 31st. Go to www.share the experience for more information.
See you at the next meeting.
