Darrell's Message for August |
The first draft of this message was on a very different topic. However, an unexpected turn of events dictated that we start over and save that one for next time. This past week we received some news that was not so good.
As of September 1 the city libraries will close an hour earlier on Monday through Thursday evenings, unless the city council fails
to approve the library board’s recommendation. The idea is to reallocate the four hours of reduced weekday service at all city libraries to enable them to open earlier and close later on Sunday.
What this means for Lincoln Camera Club is that with an 8 pm closing of Gere library during the week, we have lost our meeting place after August. Our meetings normally are scheduled for 7-9 pm. It seems doubtful that very many members would want to start earlier so we could be finished and out the door by 8 pm.
Right now we are looking for a new place for our meetings. We may have to find a temporary location to use for a month or two until a place can be found that best meets our needs. It is quite possible that we will have to pay some rent for whatever space we use. Thanks to income from our seminars this year and last we can afford to pay at least a modest sum, if necessary.
We can probably find a temporary site in a church or a retirement complex. There’s nothing wrong with such facilities. However, our preference would be to find space that would be belief and age “neutral”. Depending on what does or does not turn up, our mind might have to change.
We’ve already started scouting for a new spot. We’ve learned that space will not be available in SCC’s facilities in the old Gallop building. We’ll be checking city recreation centers this week. We invite any and all suggestions from members about possible meeting places. Send them to me at

Please remember that our regular meeting on August 19 is not at Gere Library. It will be at Walt Library, 6701 S. 14th. The time remains the same, 7-9 pm. We’ll do our best to keep you informed of any changes and of where the September competition and the regular meeting will be held.
At their meeting on August 5 the Lincoln City Council will vote on the library board’s recommended change in closing hours. We’ll keep you posted by email on the outcome and on progress in the search for a new location for club meetings. |
