Clark's Message for November
November? Can that be right? Where did "fall" go?

But, come to think of it, we did have our first good frost yesterday (is there such a thing as a good frost? Well, yes, if you like to get up early in the morning and photograph the frost on leaves, flowers, etc.). And, the temperatures have been dipping pretty low at night, and staying pretty low during the day, so I guess we have to face into it. Part of me is looking forward to winter, in order to try out a new camera cover that I received for my birthday. It has room for the right hand inside to operate the controls, and windows and flaps in all the right places to see what is going on. Being insulated, it not only protects the camera (and that right hand) from the rain and snow, but from the cold as well. This may make a winter photographer out of me yet!

There certainly are opportunities to take wonderful photographs in the winter. The secret to enjoying the experience, I think, is to wear the right clothes, and protect the equipment. This may include putting your camera in a plastic bag when you take it back into the warmth of your car or house; otherwise condensation may form, not only on the lens, but on the internal electrical components. Not good.

Look at the people who ski, snowmobile, sled, skate, hunt, and hike in the winter. They seem to enjoy their sport, most likely because of the way they dress for the cold. As you can tell by now, I'm really trying to talk myself into a good winter of outside photography. I think I'm convinced so will go on to other things that  may be of more interest to you (if you are still with me).

The Photo Workshop that Leland Osten and his committee are working up sounds like a great experience. I certainly will be in line to sign up.

Donna Gustafson is looking for indoors field trip locations. If you have any ideas, please let her know. Last year we had a good trip to the State Capitol; we could probably do that again, as I think one never exhausts all of the photo opportunities there. But, it would be nice to try a different venue, as well. By the way, the field trip to Crete was a grand success. We had pretty good turnout, and the buildings were quite interesting. I hate to admit it, but I saw a lot of things there that I grew up with. After visiting the museum, some of us went to the Doane College campus for some interesting shots. A very pretty campus.

Leann Lord is working on new programs for us, as well as helping out Elaine Bertrand with the plans for the Lincoln Orchid Society show. If you have any speaker ideas, please pass them along to Leann. We always can use more good speakers.

We have enough things going on now so that, if you are not enjoying your club, it may very well be because you are not attending the events.  But, if there is something that you feel we should be doing and are not, please let me know. My goal is to have this club the way you want it.

Best wishes for the winter season, and outdoor photography!
